Tito Romero is one of Argentina's best known theatre lighting designers and recently became a big fan of Robe when he recently started using Pointes in his work.
He comes from a theatrical family and lighting has always been in his blood he says proudly! His father, Garston Romero, was an electrician and then an LD in Buenos Aires’ famous Colon Theatre, and Tito himself has been a freelance LD since 1978, initially concentrating his considerable energies working in theatre and on arts based projects. Since 1984 he diversified more and started working on a wide variety of projects including ballet shows together with rock and other music concerts worldwide.
He first encountered Robe’s multi-purpose Pointes whilst working on a show in Mexico in early 2014 with several Mexican bands. The owner of the local rental company, who was also LD, introduced Tito to the Pointe.
He loved the fixtures so much … that he decided to start using them in Argentina whenever possible.
A recent occasion was a show at the Gran Rex Theatre for famous Argentinian singer Valeria Lynch, whom he has lit for the last 20 years.
He spec’s 16 x Pointes, 10 x LEDWash 1200s, 16 x LEDWash 600s, 12 x MMX Spots, 12 x ColorBeam 2500E ATs and around 40 Robe LEDForce 18 PARS, all programmed and operated via an Avolites Pearl. The equipment was supplied by Fernandez Luminacion from Buenos Aires.
The Pointe is a fantastic light that gives three equally strong options - as a beam, a spot or a nice even wash as well as providing texturing and effects and projected looks using the goboshe observes, "So … you can do a lot more with less fixtures".
Once he realized how smooth the movement was, he has also been introducing Pointes into some of his theatre shows.
He finds the LEDWash series excellent too - the LEDWash 1200 in particular. "I love the colour range and all the white options," he enthuses. He used them on the front truss of the Valeria show for key lighting the artist and her band. "It's very important to make sure that you have flattering light for your artist!" He adds with a knowing smile.
In this Valeria Lynch show he had 12 of the LEDWash 600s and all the ColorBeam 2500E ATs on the floor, and the show also featured three lasers.
"It was really fantastic to have moving lights which matched the lasers so well in terms of spectacle and effect," he concluded.
He now tries to get Robe on the rig for all his shows.
He is currently preparing the design for a large stadium rock show next year, for which he wants to use lots of Robes. In addition to theatre his favourite type of music to light is heavy metal ... while there are definite contrasts on one hand, but he also appreciates the many parallels between the emotion and drama of both performance genres.
